Welcome to Nan’s Kitchen, a site dedicated to exploring the foodways of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

You may be wondering, what are ‘foodways’? 

Foodways are “the eating habits and culinary practices of a people, region, or historical period” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). By studying foodways, researchers can learn a lot about the culture of a people through their dietary habits.

By taking a historical approach to exploring the culinary traditions in Newfoundland and Labrador, this site aims to highlight the nature and evolution of the culture of Canada’s most easterly province.
